Working hours and holidays


A local agreement on flexible working hours applies to all employees at Lund University with the exception of cleaners, teachers and animal maintenance staff for whom separate local agreements apply.

For employees at the Botanical Gardens there are special regulations on flexible hours and the flexible hours framework.

Flexible hours

The standard working hours for full-time employees are 8 hours per day. A lunch break is not included in the working hours.

The flexible hours for full-time employees are 07.00-09.00 in the morning and 15.00-19.00 in the afternoon. A lunch break may be taken at any time between 11.30 and 13.30.

Public holidays and other days off

Public holidays are days off. Apart from Saturdays and Sundays, public holidays include Easter Eve, Whitsun Eve, Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Other days off are any Monday to Friday between two work-free days that is not a public holiday (“klämdagar”).

For full-time employees the working hours on certain days are reduced by the number of hours shown in the list below:  

  • Twelfth Night: 4 hours
  • Maundy Thursday: 2 hours
  • 30 April when it is a
    a) Monday–Thursday: 2 hours
    b) Friday: 4 hours
  • The Friday between 31 October and 6 November (All Hallow’s Eve): 4 hours
  • 23 December when it is a Friday: 4 hours

For part-time employees, the working hours are reduced in proportion to their total working hours.
