In accordance with the Parental Leave Act, employees are entitled to full parental leave until the child has reached 18 months. Furthermore, parents are entitled to a reduction of normal working hours by up to one quarter until the child reaches the age of eight or finishes the first year of school. In addition, parents are entitled to leave during the time they are receiving parental allowance or temporary parental allowance from the Social Insurance Office (Försäkringskassan).
Applications for leave in conjunction with the birth of a child must be submitted to the workplace no later than two months in advance or, when that is not possible, as soon as possible.
In accordance with the ordinance on leave of absence, employees should also be entitled to partial leave for care of a sick child until the end of the school year in which the child turns twelve.
