Quality Assurance and the Bologna process

The European Ministers responsible for higher education have established guidelines for quality assurance. These guidelines encompass both internal and external quality assurance (cf. Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, 2005).

The Vice Chancellor ratified in 2006 a strategy for quality assurance at Lund University 2006-2008. It included development efforts concerning:

  1. validating new study programmes
  2. quality assurance of courses
  3. quality assurance of degrees
  4. follow-up of internationalization, and
  5. follow-up using performance indicators

The strategy implied a further development of the methodology which has been developed since 1989. It also takes advantage of experiences from other European universities.

The University Board raified in December 2008 Lund University´s Policy for Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement of Education 2009-2012 in accordance with the Strategic Plan. QA of Education i based on the six following main methods:

  2. Evaluation of the quality of examination and of qualifications/learning outcomes
  3. Evaluation of courses - overall assessments of courses based on, inter alia, evaluation questionnaires completed by students
  4. Monitoring of alumni/alumnae and of potential employers
  5. 'Barometer' surveys to investigate how students, including doctoral students, and employees experience education
  6. Monitoring based on performance indicators.
